Students will be introduced to the amazing complexity of life, from a single cell to the vast diversity of plant and animal life on Earth. Topics will include cellular biology, genetics, organ systems, health and medicine, and the interrelationship between organisms and their environment.
Students will learn about the amazing molecular machines that comprise the cell. They will also learn how DNA stores the blueprint for making an organism, and see the many interrelated parts and processes needed to turn that information into an organism.
Students will learn about the way specified cells form tissues, and tissues form the complex systems which are the major functions of our body, from eating to breathing, and all five senses. Students will also learn about some of the world’s many fascinating animals, like the platypus and the water-bear, and learn how to classify them according to various shared characteristics. Learning will be both academic as well as practical and hands on.
As it is the predominant theory, as well as the one they will be expected to know in college, this class will touch on the evolutionary theory so that students will have an accurate understanding of what the theory teaches. However, students will also be given a clear understanding of both the weaknesses of the theory, as well as the strengths of the Biblical worldview. While Mr. Melugin is a young earth creationist (Best exemplified by Answers In Genesis/Ken Ham) he will teach the competing views of evolution, Theistic Evolution, and Middle Age Creationism (exemplified by Reasons to Believe/Hugh Ross) so that the students can be well informed of the discussion which has been happening in our culture for the past century and capable of participating in discussions of their own.
